Free College Day Returns at JCCC

Thanks to you, Johnson County Community College experienced great success with its Free College Day in 2009. So, we're doing it again on April 30 --and you're among the first to know about it and all the wonderful classes we're offering this year.

Although the event will be free to the public, registration is still required. Registration will begin March 7, but you can visit www.jccc.edu/freecollegeday anytime between now and then to preview the classes you might want to take on April 30.

This year, you'll find more than 200 45-minute classes arts, business, computers, language and more! Classes will be offered at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. across the college campus. Plus, participants can enjoy live entertainment that afternoon in the college's performing arts spaces. And, just like last time, everything is free!

The 2011 Cambio de Colores Conference (www.cambiodecolores.org) is
scheduled for June 8-10 in Kansas City. The conference brings state
of the art research and best practices that benefit the participants
and inform decision and policy makers of the multiple ways in which
Midwestern stakeholders are addressing the most significant
demographic change in decades.

A call for abstracts has been posted on the conference website,
www.cambiodecolores.org. Submissions for presentations and papers
will be accepted from January 31 thru February 13, 2011. The website
offers extensive background on past conferences. Please share this
information with those you feel may be interested. Save the date and
plan to attend.

Good Morning All

I have exciting news to share the 2011 HSF scholarship is now
available. What is more exciting is that you can now apply ONLINE! We
are very excited to have the application online however please note
that if a student applies online they must upload all documents (i.e.
tax forms, transcript, acceptance letter if they have one). They will
not be able to submit the application unless they have uploaded the
necessary documents. The online system allows the student to save
their application and return later to complete and/or upload their
documents. A student will also be able to type their essay directly
onto the online application or cut and paste from a word document.

to apply online or download the application to mail in. A student
also has the option to download the application and submit the
application and the attachments in paper form; you can download the
application at the same link above.

The application deadline is March 1st! Applications submitted by mail
must be post-marked by March 1, 2011. Applications submitted online
or dropped off must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on March 1, 2011.

download the application and make copies available to students.

I will be hosting two weekend working sessions for students on Sunday,
February 20th and Sunday, February 27th from 1-4 at the Greater Kansas
City Community Foundation. We will have a computer lab available for
students to complete their application online as well as a scanner to
assist students with scanning and uploading their documents.

City crews prepare for snowy weather

City of Kansas City, Mo., crews assigned to arterial, primary and
residential streets are prepared to respond to the winter weather that has been forecast to move into the Kansas City area Sunday.

For the past few days, City crews have been treating many City streets with a brine solution in an effort to prevent the anticipated snow from bonding to the street surface.

Crews assigned to snow routes on arterial and primary streets are prepared to begin Phase II snow operations. Crews assigned to snow routes on residential streets will be called to begin plowing operations as needed.

"Our City Manager and Public Works Department have done what they can to prepare for whatever weather may come our way. After last year's record storms, we've incorporated performance measures and reorganized our snow response. I am confident we will see better results this year."

The City's Snow and Ice Plan calls for the City's Public Works, Parks and Recreation and Water Services departments to collaborate on removing snow and ice from approximately 2,400 lane-miles of primary and arterial routes and applying salt as needed. On primary and arterial streets, crews plow curb-to-curb and work around the clock.

Crews assigned to residential routes plow during daytime hours and work to provide a passable lane. Crews assigned to residential streets apply salt on intersections, hills and curves and plow snow as needed on more than 2,000 centerline-miles of residential routes.

Whenever snow depths exceed a couple of inches, residents are advised that parking cars off-street during snow plow operations greatly enhances the ability of snow plows to remove snow, especially in cul-de-sacs and dead end streets. Residents parking on signed Emergency Snow Routes should be prepared to find alternate parking locations to avoid vehicles being ticketed or towed.

Annual Holiday Dinner - Posada del Sol

MANA will host its annual holiday dinner for the residents of Posada del Sol on Friday, December 3, and we need your help. A sign up sheet will be circulated at the November 11 Membership meeting for you to sign up to bring a food. For anyone who has participated in past years, you know how much the residents enjoy and appreciate this event. We enjoy it too.

In addition to the meal, we will provide gift bags for each residents. We are in the process of identifying the number of male and female residents at Posada but in past years we've had a total of approximately 65. Gift items and toiletries will be needed for each of the bags. More information on the needs for the event will be provided at the meeting.

Scholarship Festival Work sessions-December 13

The Latinos of Tomorrow will be sponsoring working sessions to help high school and college students search and apply for private scholarships. The Scholarship sessions will include a review of the basic application process including: basic application criteria required, essay writing, and an understanding of how to use scholarship research engines. We will also have computer workstations and mentors who will help students identify national scholarships.

The sessions are free and open to all current Community College, University/College, Senior and Junior High School students. We encourage students bring their parents and family members.

The Scholarship Festival will be held at the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce offices, (1600 Baltimore, KCMO, 64111). The sessions start at 10am through 2:30pm. Dear President-elect Obama:

As leaders of organizations dedicated to the support and advancement of women and girls and their families, we congratulate you on your historic victory and the promise it holds not only for our shared values but the nation as a whole. The gender gap was alive and thriving in this year's election; we believe the unmistakable support of women voters has given you a tremendous opportunity to make women's issues a clear priority of your administration. This is a cause that we know you support, and we stand ready to work with you to advance our mutual agenda.

We are looking forward to working with you and your administration to achieve historic levels of appointments of talented, visionary women at all levels of the executive branch. We were pleased to see the nominations of Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State, Janet Napolitano for Secretary of Homeland Security, and Susan Rice for Ambassador to the United Nations. Moreover, we appreciate the appointments of highly-qualified women to key administration positions, including, most recently, Melody Barnes, Christina Romer and Ellen Moran. With these and other pending appointments and nominations, you have shown your willingness to name women to important posts. We applaud and thank you for these efforts.

We urge you to strengthen these efforts, and extend them even further both with regard to the makeup of your cabinet and other political appointments. Women have made tremendous strides in becoming top decision makers in both public service and private enterprise. Even so, few women in American history have been given the honor of serving their country in a president's cabinet. As the aforementioned nominees demonstrate, there are many qualified and accomplished women willing and able to lead our executive departments and agencies; your administration would be wise to grant more of them such an opportunity. We urge you to appoint more women than your predecessors to your Cabinet.

As you know, achieving gender equity goes beyond appointing women to government offices; it extends to putting policies and regulations in place which confront problems head-on and generate long-lasting solutions. Toward that end, we further ask you to restore and strengthen all offices that in past administrations have played a fundamental role in protecting and advancing women's issues and opportunities. For example, the White House Office for Women's Initiatives and Outreach and the President's Interagency Council on Women once served as proactive liaisons to the women's community, promoted interagency collaboration to address critical issues, and furthered policy initiatives to advance women's progress. Reestablishing and strengthening these and other offices would send a strong signal and provide a platform for the development and implementation of new ideas.

It has taken centuries of hard work and sustained hope to get women where we are today, but much more work needs to be done. Lost ground must be regained, and new doors must be opened. You have called on Americans for bold solutions to our challenges. We have heard your call, and stand ready to work with you and your administration to advance equity for women and girls.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and at times death. Every year in the United States an average of 36,000 people die and more than 200,000 (30,000 are Hispanics) are hospitalized from serious flu-related complications according to CDC data. The 9th leading cause of death among Hispanics in 2007 was the influenza. Within the Hispanic community the biggest concern has been Latinos 65 and older and their caretakers, since the elderly are more likely to have complications from the flu.The CDC notes that the best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year by either doing the shot or the nasal spray vaccine. The CDC aims every year to have 85% of the American population vaccinated. The flu vaccination begins in September and its availability continues through the influenza season, into December, January, etc. It is encouraged that children ages 6 months-19 years of age get vaccinated as well as those who are caretakers or work with children. Also pregnant women, people 50 years of age and older (their caretakers), people with certain chronic medical conditions, and those who work or care for those at high risk for flu complications like health care workers and providers. "The impact of influenza can affect a family's health and very often their financial well-being. This can greatly prevented simply by getting a flu shot. In 1991, The Women's Foundation of Greater Kansas City commissioned an eight-county community-wide study (Women in the Heart of America: Concerns, Needs and Priority Issues for the 1990s) to obtain, for the first time in the history of the community, baseline research on the needs and priorities of Kansas City women and girls. The study examined the significance of six major categories: education, employment and finance, family and child welfare, health, quality of life, and violence toward women and children. Findings from that initial study were used by The Women's Foundation to construct targeted strategies, services, and programs to better meet the basic needs of women and girls in Kansas City.

Today, fifteen years later, The Foundation has replicated the study to determine if the needs and priorities of Kansas City women and girls have changed. The Foundation will share the study findings at a community forum on Friday, November 14, 2008. Key community stakeholders are invited to attend and offer their input in the development of solutions targeting the pervasive problems that keep women and girls in our community from reaching their full potential.

Dr. Barbara Gault, Vice President and Director of Research from the Institute for Women's Policy Research will be the forum's guest speaker. Dr. Gault will help translate the research findings and suggest solutions to help the community and The Women's Foundation make a real difference in women's lives in Kansas City.

Holiday Mom¢s Makeover (pay it forward)

Hello,

The Holidays are a time of celebration and everyone wants to make it extra special for the children but this year we would also like to include the Mom¢s.

There are many moms, single moms and caregivers who give unconditionally and never take time for themselves. This is for the mom who does not have the opportunity or the money to have a professional style their hair, apply their makeup, and then find that perfect outfit to make them feel and look wonderful.

My friend Anna Tarr and I have decided to make this a possibility for 200 deserving women.

On Sunday December 21^st from 12 to 5 we will be holding a Holiday Moms Make-over.

Mr Mitso Sato of Mitso Sato Hair Academy at 91st and Metcalf will be donating his salon space. We have 30-hair stylist that are donating their time. We have a photographer that will be taking before and after pictures.

Each woman will receive:

Andrés Rodríguez is the author of a book of poetry, Night Song (Tia
Chucha Press), and one of literary criticism, Book of the Heart: The
Poetics, Letters, and Life of John Keats (Lindisfarne Press). His
poems have appeared in The Americas Review, Bilingual Review, Blue
Mesa Review, The Cortland Review, Palabra, Valparaiso Poetry Review,
and other journals and have been included in Currents from the Dancing
River (Harcourt Brace), Dream of a Word (Tia Chucha Press), New
Chicano/Chicana Writing (University of Arizona Press), and Wild Song
(University of Georgia Press). He won the 2007 Maureen Egan Writers
Exchange Prize for Poetry sponsored by Poets & Writers. He has degrees
in English from the University of Iowa, Stanford University, and the
University of California-Santa Cruz and has taught writing and
literature around the country.

Gloria Martinez Adams is a southwestern Chicana, transplanted in the
Midwest. "I belong to part of the rebellious generation that broke
loose of the segregation imposed on Hispanos in the 50's, 60's & 70's.
That is where my storytelling comes in – life was good simply sitting
around a wood burning stove, pine & piñon permeating the air,
listening to stories passed down from generations of Spanish settlers.
Those tales never grow old for me."

Maria Vasquez Boyd continues exhibiting, painting and illustrating
across the country. Some of her works includes murals in Mexico. She
is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, Boyd returned to teach
in the Design/Illustration Department. She taught at the Nelson Atkins
Museum, worked for Hallmark Cards, and currently is the gallery
coordinator for the Guadalupe Center and for The Writers Place. Boyd
continues to write poetry and is a founding member of the Latino
Writers Collective.

Gabriela N. Lemmons was born and raised in South Texas, a stone's
throw from El Rio Grande. "As an only child of migrant workers, I was
raised in a household where Spanish was the spoken language. I enjoy
writing bi-lingual poetry and memoir. I am inspired to write so that
my only child, Javier, will one day read about the abuelitos he never
met. But most importantly, I write so that I may never forget where I
came from."

Chato Villalobos was born in Los Angeles California but has lived in
Kansas City Missouri most of his life. Chato is a new member of the
Latino Writers Collective and has been involved in the performing arts
for over 15 years including acting with the Coterie Theater and as a
former folkloric dancer with El Grupo Atotonilco. A Kansas City,
Missouri, police officer, Chato's current loves are writing poetry and
youth advocacy.

ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri joins WECAN, a coalition of
partner organizations, to publicly oppose a divisive and deceptive
ballot initiative which would eliminate affirmative action in
Missouri.

You may have seen these petitions with the title, Missouri Civil
Rights Initiative. The petition seeks a November vote to change
Missouri's constitution by adding an amendment which would eliminate
affirmative action programs in hiring, higher education and public
contracting.

Affirmative action benefits many people who continue to face
opportunity barriers, including women, Native Americans, Latinos,
Asian Americans, South Asians, African Americans, Arab Americans,
people living in remote areas, and many others.

The WECAN coalition is made up of several local and statewide
organizations, including ACLU, YWCA, UMKC, AFL-CIO, MORE2, SEIU, Jobs
with Justice, NAACP, area churches and community groups.

Attend the public hearing on February 11.

SAVE THE DATE ---WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2008 --- for an interesting and
educational day in Topeka, Kansas. I know not all of you are Kansas
residents, however, you are invited.

Traditionally, the day in Topeka was titled "Hispanic Day on the Hill."
Whatever the day is titled, the objective remains the same, and, is to
encourage Hispanics/Latinos of all ages to become politically involved
at all levels.

I have yet to see an official agenda, but, I do know the keynote speaker
will be Julie Chavez Rodriguez (granddaughter of Cesar E. Chavez). Ms.
Rodriguez's speech is titled "Working Together to Reach a Common Goal:
The Ability of Cesar E. Chavez to Unite Communities."

The program will begin at 10:00 AM on the second floor of the Capitol's
rotunda. After the speech, the day will continue with lunch and
conversations with State Agency Secretaries and State Legislators.

At the Kansas Hispanic and Latino American Affairs Commission's website,

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps are holding a meeting in Kansas City

HISPANIC WOMEN WRITERS SERIES presents: Helena Maria Viramontes

Acclaimed as "one of the most important multicultural voices of American literature," author Helena Maria Viramontes speaks about her most recent novel, Their Dogs Came with Them, on Thursday, February 7, at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main Street as opart of the Kansas City Public Library's Hispanic Women Writers series.

Their Dogs Came with Them has been called "a lyrically muscular, artfully crafted novel" that "offers a profoundly gritty portrait of everyday life" in the barrios of East Los Angeles. Set in the 1960s, Their Dogs Came with Them traces the struggles of a group of young Latinos as they make their way "through the turbulent urban landscape." Reviewers have hailed Viramontes for a voice in Their Dogs Came with Them that is "at once terse, energetic, and vivid," and a prose style displaying "an honesty and compassion that is lacking in our time."

Viramontes, a professor in the Department of English at Cornell University, is also the author of Under the Feet of Jesus and The Moths and Other Stories, and co-editor with Maria Herrera-Sobek of Chicana (W)Rites:On Word and Film, and Chicana Creativity and Criticism. In 2006, Viramontes won both the Luis Leal Award and the John Dos Passos Award for Literature.

The visit of Helena Maria Viramontes to the Plaza Branch is event is co-sponsored by the Latino Writers Collective. Copies of Viramontes' books will be available for sale, and the author will autograph copies purchased during the event.

Time frames and Location: Summer program: June 1 not to exceed

Qualification Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens and at

American Cancer Society Stresses Importance of Informed Decision Making
Regarding Prostate Cancer Screenings

For men and their loved ones, two of the many issues surrounding prostate cancer are fear and confusion. In fact, news coverage has centered on the debate surrounding the benefits and limitations associated with prostate cancer testing and treatment - the main controversy around whether or not testing saves lives. According to the American Cancer Society, the nation's leading voluntary health organization, more than 234,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and more than 27,000 will succumb to the disease.
The Society encourages all men to:
" Get as much information about prostate health as they can.
" Talk with their doctor to determine their personal risk for prostate cancer.
" Understand all available testing and treatment options so they can make informed decisions.
" Contact the American Cancer Society for information about all aspects of prostate cancer 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (1.800.ACS.2345)

Many African American men don't realize they are at higher risk for prostate cancer and are twice as more likely to die from the disease as other American men. Risk factors for all men include age and family history. Prostate cancer is slow-growing in the majority of men who have it. Most men diagnosed will die with prostate cancer rather than from prostate cancer. In other words, most will die from other causes.
Prostate cancer can remain symptomless for years, and most cases of early prostate cancer cause no symptoms. Men should talk with their doctors if they have questions or are experiencing any symptoms that concern them, such as:

" Frequent urination
" Inability to urinate, or difficulty starting or holding back urination
" Weak or interrupted urine flow
" Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs
" Blood in urine
" Pain or burning on urination

The current American Cancer Society guidelines are recommendations, not rules. Written for both doctors and the public, the guidelines are flexible in order to accommodate individual medical and personal needs, and are subject to revision based on new research evidence. Society guidelines are:
" Men 50 and older should be offered early detection tests (PSA and DRE) annually.
" Men at high risk (family history, African Americans) should begin early detection testing (PSA and DRE) at age 45.
" Prior to testing, all men should be provided with information about the benefits and limitations of testing.
"Given the implications of early detection testing, the American Cancer Society encourages men to consider it carefully," said Terri Thomas, Regional Director of Corporate Relations.
The American Cancer Society offers several programs for men and their families who have been affected by prostate cancer, including Man to Man®, a prostate cancer education and support program offering information to men and their partners in a comfortable setting.

As a majority of the airlines do not provide discount fares for the military, the men and women actively serving our country are paying for their own flights home during leave and - in many instances - are paying higher fares than most of the public. The reason for this is that they are unable to book their tickets in advance as their leaves are not always granted 21, 14 nor 7 days in advance. Application period for $1,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarships begins Nov. 1

BENTONVILLE, AR, Oct. 31, 2007 - The Wal-Mart Foundation announced
today that the application period for the Sam Walton Community
Scholarships begins Nov. 1 in all U.S.-based Wal-Mart stores, Sam's
Clubs and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets. More than 7,000 scholarships
are available to graduating high school seniors, who will receive a
one-time scholarship of $1,000 to help pay for expenses at the
accredited college or university of their choice. Winners will be
recognized in April. The Wal-Mart Foundation awards more than $6
million annually to graduating high school seniors throughout the
country.

For 27 years, the Sam Walton Community Scholarship program has
provided assistance to students trying to find a way to pay for
college. Since its inception, the program has awarded more than $64
million to approximately 64,000 students. To be eligible for
consideration, a student must be a graduating high school senor, a
permanent legal resident of the U.S. and have a minimum grade point
average of 2.5. The Scholarship Program Administrators (SPA) will
select winners based on financial need, academic record, and school
and community involvement.

Qualified students can obtain applications for the Sam Walton
Community Scholarships at any Wal-Mart store, Neighborhood Market or
Sam's Club. Applications and additional information are also available
online at www.walmartfoundation.org. The deadline for submitting
applications is Jan. 14.

The Wal-Mart Foundation also offers two additional scholarship
programs for the benefit of its associates and their dependents. The
Associate Scholarship program provides assistance to graduating high
school seniors who are currently employed at Wal-Mart, and Higher
Reach scholarships help associates who have already graduated to
begin, continue or complete their higher education.

Wal-Mart is one of the largest corporate supporters of education in
the U.S., having provided more than $57 million last year to a host of
education initiatives, including scholarship assistance, literacy
programs, teacher recognition awards and general community educational
programs. The company has awarded more than $83 million in
scholarships alone since 1981. In addition, Wal-Mart is also a strong
supporter of many national scholarship programs such as the United

I wanted to introduce myself, my name is Linda Guerra - Lara, and I am the coordinator for the Guadalupe Centers Senior Program. I, along with Frances Wallace and Sonia Lona will be coordinating the volunteers for this years "Community Thanksgiving Luncheon".

We are looking for volunteers to help us with this year's "Community Thanksgiving Luncheon" on November 20th from 9:30 - 2:00 PM. On this day Guadalupe Centers prepares a Thanksgiving lunch for over 800 people in a period of 4 hours, it's great time for all, not only is it open to our Guadalupe Center participants such as our preschool, high school, seniors but also to the people in the community.

We are always in need of volunteers for this event. We need volunteers to help set up before and in between lunch shifts, serving meals, serving desserts and (of course) cleaning up.

If you are unable to volunteer your time we would appreciate any donations of desserts and/or monetary donations you would like to give. All is appreciated!!

On Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, Kansas City Public May Purchase USO Care Packages for U.S. Troops Overseas

Kansas City area public can purchase USO Care Packages for our military troops overseas - the only care packages sanctioned by the Department of Defense. The USO Care Packages may be purchased for a tax-deductible $25, but each care package has about $50 to $75 worth of merchandise in them (as much is donated) - items such as phone cards, disposable cameras, toiletries, snacks, etc.

This is part of the Waddell & Reed 70th Anniversary Goodwill Tour to 70 cities to say thank you to troops overseas. Waddell & Reed is one of the countries oldest mutual fund companies. So far, donations of nearly $400,000, have been collected, enough for 16,000 USO Care Packages -- due to the enthusiasm and generosity of the American people. Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on
undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no
tuition. In
making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers
said, "When only 10 percent of the students in Elite higher
education come from families in lower half of the income
distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in
bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income
distribution."

If you know of a family earning less than $40,000 a year with an
honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University
w ants t o pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently
announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-in come
families can go to Harvard for free...no tuition and no student
loans!

Stacey Tolbert, poet, film producer, journalist, and playwright, wrote and produced the successful play, Not My Size, and was co-producer of the documentary on women's attitudes toward and society's emphasis on their breasts, Got Breast? She was a poet-in-residence for the Kansas City Public Library and a workshop facilitator in Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, schools. The author of a poetry collection, Baring My Soul, Stacy recently won the coveted Cave Canem Fellowship. While a disc jockey on KSDS, San Diego's premiere public radio station, she won the 2004 San Diego Press Club Journalism Award for her article, "War Torn."

especially in waiting rooms.

Joe is a muralist, a painter, a newspaper editor, a youth advocate,

Barbara Moss is an award-winning memoirist and screenwriter. She won a
gold medal in the William Faulkner Creative Writing Competition for
her personal essay Near the Center of the Earth and the Alabama Author
Award for Nonfiction and the Iowa Authors Award for her memoir Change
Me Into Zeus's Daughter. Her dramatic adaptation of her memoir was
performed by the Urban Theater Project and optioned for a television
movie for which she has written the screenplay. Her second memoir,
Fierce, was published by Scribner's in 2004. Moss has been reviewed or
interviewed in The New York Times Book Review, The London Daily
Telegraph, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Review, The Washington Post, The
Chicago Tribune, People, Biography, Elle, Allure, Atlanta Journal &
Constitution, The Hartford Courant, Birmingham News, The Des Moines
Register, The Times-Picayune, and USA Today and appeared on All Things
Considered, Jackie Lyden, The Gary Robertson Show, BBC Radio Scotland,
The Diane Rehm Show, The David Rothenburg Show, and WBAI Radio New
York, among others.

Christie Hodgen won the AWP Short Fiction Prize in 2001 for A
Jeweler's Eye for Flaw (University of Massachusetts Press 2003), and
her novel, Hello, I Must Be Going (Norton 2006), was a Barnes and
Noble "Discover Great New Writers" choice. Her fiction has appeared in
over a dozen magazines and anthologies, and has won a Pushcart Prize,
a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Grant, the Faulkner
Society Novella Prize, and the Ernest Hemingway Award for the short
story. She holds an M.F.A. from Indiana University and a Ph.D. from
the University of Missouri and is currently Assistant Professor of
Creative Writing-Fiction at the University of Missouri-Kansas City,
where she teaches fiction writing and contemporary literature.

Judith Fertig is a food/lifestyle writer and cookbook author. Her
recent book, Prairie Home Bread, has been nominated for both the James
Beard and International Association of Culinary Professionals cookbook
awards and was chosen by the Chicago Tribune as one of the "Top Ten
Cookbooks of 2002." She co-authored The BBQ Queens' Big Book of
Barbecue and Weeknight Grilling with the BBQ Queens with Karen Adler.
She has been featured on the TV Food Network, in USA Today, Bon
Appetit, Southern Living, Better Homes & Gardens, Country Living, The
London Sunday Times, and The New York Times. Fertig's professional
culinary training includes La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine when it was
still in Paris and the Cordon Bleu in London.

Maria Vazquez Boyd, poet and artist, continues exhibiting, painting
and illustrating across the country. Some of her works include murals
in Mexico. She is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute. Boyd
returned to teach in the Design/Illustration Department. She taught at
the Nelson Atkins Museum, worked for Hallmark Cards, and currently is
the gallery coordinator for the Guadalupe Center and The Writers
Place. Boyd continues to write poetry and is a founding member of the
Latino Writers Collective. Her work is forthcoming in the anthology,

Her mission is to bring untold stories of Latinas to both television
and film. On Wednesday 09/26/07 at 7:30pm in John Gano Memorial
Chapel on the William Jewel College Campus in Liberty, MO. The pulbic
has been invited to attend a free event which is the 2007 Peggy Kern
Lecture on Women and Society, part of the college's, "Perspectives on
the Common Good" lecture series. At the college her lecture,
entitled, "Femicide At Our U.S. Border: To Be A Women In Juarez Is A
Death Sentence." Martinez will discuss the crippling poverty and
gender discrimination in the Mexican city of Juarez, Chihuahua, where
more than 400 women have been found raped, mutilated and murdered.

The lecture is named in memory of the mother of Jewell Alumni, Penny
Kern White class of 1968.

The immigrant experience is the essence to who we are as a nation. Immigrants are, and always have been, at the center of our nation's democratic experiment. Through hard work, small business development and an entrepreneurial spirit, they contribute to the economic growth and revitalization of our state and our nation. One needs only to look at Lake Street to see the rich vitality coming into our state as a result of immigrants. I honor and support immigrants and intend to be one of their champions in the United States Congress.

I support comprehensive immigration reform and will work hard as a member of the United States Congress to move that agenda forward. Current immigration laws are outdated, unenforceable and do not offer a path to citizenship for the more than 11 million people currently living and working in the U.S. Denying a path to citizenship for millions of immigrants who work and pay taxes makes it easier for unscrupulous employers to exploit these workers and drive down standards for all working people.

I adamantly oppose the Sensenbrenner-King bill in the U.S. House of Representatives. This vindictive legislation must be stopped. I will instead support immigration legislation that provides a clear path to citizenship for the 11 million people who are already in the United States working and paying taxes. I also support an expedited process for family reunification and believe the federal government has an obligation to clear up the backlog of family requests.

In the Minnesota House, I stood up to Governor Pawlenty and the Republican agenda that would deny people their civil, economic and human rights. I actively supported the passage of the DREAM Act, legislation designed to increase access to higher education for the children of foreign-born workers. By allowing young immigrant high school graduates the opportunity to go to college while paying in-state tuition, we would give them the possibility of building a better future for themselves and the generations that are to follow.

I was one of only 25 Representatives to oppose HF0001 that required immigration status be shown on drivers' licenses. I opposed this legislation because one's immigration status changes more frequently than a driver's license and because it should not be used as a "label" when people merely want to cash checks or show
identification.

I opposed Rep. Knoblach's bill to preempt the right of Minnesota municipalities to enact separation ordinances that prevent local law enforcement from becoming involved outside their jurisdiction, specifically acting as immigration agents. Asking local law enforcement to act as immigration agents is not a prudent use of law
enforcement resources. It weakens their ability to build trust with the community and gather information on criminal activity.

I spoke out against Governor Pawlenty's statements attributing increased crime rates to immigration. Crime increases when opportunity becomes scarce and poverty takes root, not when people relocate in order to better their lives. The overwhelming majority of immigrants are law-abiding people. Working together with them to find
solutions to the need for more orderly immigration, we will strengthen our democracy, our communities and the human rights of immigrants.

There are forces in this country who are rabidly anti-immigrant, and politicians who use immigrants as pawns in their political games. These regressive forces have coalesced into a political movement that must be stopped. I will be a strong voice in Congress challenging those forces.

Job summary
Provides professional and administrative assistance to the County
Legislator by managing constituent services, policy research, and
implementation of Legislator's decisions. Also, manages public
relations, organizes Legislator's initiatives and schedule and
coordinates efforts with other County staff when required.
Description of essential job functions
Support activities in the office of a County Legislator including
taking constituent phone calls; registering their opinions/concerns,

impacting the County; researching and preparing press releases;

Minimum requirements
(1) Must have a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Political
Science, Urban Studies, or related field; OR two years of professional

(2) Must be fluent in Spanish. (3) Must be a Jackson County
Resident.

A few months ago, MARC contacted various organizations like yours to
help get feedback and ideas for the update of the Public Participation
Plan, the document that guides how the public will be engaged in
transportation planning in the region. Your organization helped us
immensely and we would like to thank you for allowing us the
opportunity to broaden our reach.

One of the most important ideas reinforced during this process was the
value community organizations have in connecting members of the
community to regional transportation planning activities and the
decision making processes. We hope that because we were able to
connect with more people through your organization, the Public
Participation Plan proves to be more robust.

The plan is now complete and available for review and comment. You
can find the plan on the MARC website at

The Latino Writers Collective

The Latino Writers Collective is a group of Latino writers living and
working in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Through bi-weekly
meetings and critiques, the Collective helps hone and polish the work
of its members for publication. In addition to creative support, the
Collective organizes and coordinates projects for the larger
community, such as the Primera Página Reading Series to showcase
national and local Latino writers and provide role models and
instruction to Latino youth.
The Latino Writers Collective's mission is to foster an environment
where the voices of Latino students, blue collar workers,
professionals, and homemakers can finally be heard, contributing their
experience and vision to the larger Kansas City community.

Gloria Martinez Adams is a southwestern Chicana, transplanted in the
Midwest. "I belong to part of the rebellious generation that broke
loose of the segregation imposed on Hispanos in the 50's, 60's & 70's.
If "I left my Heart in New Mexico" was a song, it would be my song.
Although most of my growing-up years were spent in a dusty mining town
in Arizona, I was born in an adobe dwelling in New Mexico and spent
summers visiting relatives there. That is where my storytelling comes
in – life was good simply sitting around a wood burning stove, pine &
piñon permeating the air, listening to stories passed down from
generations of Spanish settlers. Those tales never grow old for me."

Maria Vazquez Boyd continues exhibiting, painting and illustrating
across the country. Some of her works includes murals in Mexico. She
is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, Boyd returned to teach
in the Design/Illustration Department. She taught at the Nelson Atkins
Museum, worked for Hallmark Cards, and currently is the gallery
coordinator for the Guadalupe Center and for The Writers Place. Boyd
continues to write poetry and is a founding member of the Latino
Writers Collective.

Joe Faus was born in Bogota, Colombia and has been a long time
resident of Kansas City. He received degrees in art and writing from
UMKC. For Joe, art is a way to express an interior dialogue- in other
words, he talks to himself a lot and sometimes he listens. He reads
anything available, especially in waiting rooms. Joe is a muralist,
newspaper editor and founding member of the Latino Writers Collective.

Gabriela N. Lemmons was born and raised in South Texas, a stone's
throw from El Rio Grande. "As an only child of migrant workers, I was
raised in a household where Spanish was the spoken language. My father
was a remarkable storyteller and after his passing, I was inspired to
write down his recollections. I enjoy writing bi-lingual poetry and
memoir. I am inspired to write so that my only child, Javier, will one
day read about the abuelitos he never met. But most importantly, I
write so that I may never forget where I came from."

Linda Rodriguez is a member of the Latino Writers Collective,
founder/coordinator of the annual Kansas City Women Writers Reading
Series, and has published poetry and fiction in regional and national
literary magazines, as well as in several anthologies. Her chapbook,
Skin Hunger, was named by Michael Bugeja of Writer's Digest as one of
the four top poetry chapbooks of the year. She has also published
numerous articles for general and scholarly publications, including
three articles on Rudolfo Anaya's work in the forthcoming Encyclopedia
of Hispanic Literature.

INTRODUCTION:

Position is located in the Kansas City, KS Wage and Hour District
Office jurisdiction. The mission of the District Office is to
execute, within its geographical jurisdiction, the enforcement,
compliance, educational and information programs of the Wage and Hour
Division. These programs include the Fair Labor Standards Act; the
Family Medical Leave Act; Davis Bacon Act; Walsh-Healey Public
Contracts Act; Service Contract Act; Contract Work Hours Safety
Standards Act and other related acts.

MAJOR DUTIES:

The incumbent serves as an advanced trainee or developmental level
Wage and Hour Compliance Specialist. Incumbent receives basic
training under a structured training program. Assignments are
designed to provide the incumbent with an opportunity to observe and
participate in the application of the provisions of the laws enforced
by Wage and Hour, the conduct of investigations to ensure compliance
with these laws and negotiation techniques for the correction of
violations. Cases are assigned by the supervisor on the basis of
potential difficulty and complexity of investigations, usually limited
to comparatively small firms involving problems which are clearly
covered by directly applicable policy and procedural guidelines.
After limited training, the incumbent will independently conduct
moderately difficult investigations to effect compliance with the laws
within the jurisdiction of Wage and Hour. The incumbent will
negotiate for compliance and payment of back wages when authorized, or
participates in such negotiations with the supervisor or a higher
level investigator. The incumbent prepares case reports and submits
completed cases to supervisor.

Incumbent also receives assignments involving workers who may be
unable to communicate effectively using the English language, thereby
requiring the incumbent to communicate in the worker's native Spanish
language.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:

This position involves a variety of personal work contacts that
require courtesy, ingenuity, and the ability to deal with people
effectively to obtain or give information. These contacts are made
with employees and managers of firms investigated, and require the
ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively using both the Spanish and English
languages (speaking, reading, writing and comprehension) is mandatory
to aid in the resolution of violations involving workers who are
unable to communicate effectively using the English language, thereby
requiring the incumbent to communicate in the workers' native Spanish
language as well as in English.

The Pew Hispanic Center today released its report on the progress of foreign-born Latino workers between 1995 and 2005 when ranked by hourly wage. The analysis is based on data from the federal government, and examines whether foreign-born workers are concentrated in low-wage segments of the workforce or moving into middle- and higher-wage segments. It also looks at how newly arrived immigrants and immigrants from different regions of the world are faring.
